DCRB 1B6

If the title proper for a work that is supplementary to, or a section of, another work appears in two or more parts not grammatically linked, transcribe the title of the main work first, followed by the title(s) of the supplement(s) or section(s) in order of their dependence. Separate the parts of the title proper by periods. When the arrangement indicated requires transposition, make a note to indicate the actual reading of the titles.

Faust. Part one

Note: Title page reads: Part one. Faust

AACR2 1.1B9

If the title proper for an item that is supplementary to, or a section of, another item appears in two or more parts not grammatically linked, give the title of the main work first, followed by the title(s) of the supplementary item(s) or section(s) in order of their dependence. Separate the parts of the title proper by full stops.

Journal of biosocial science. Supplement

(Title appears on item as:

JOURNAL OF BIOSOCIAL SCIENCE

Supplement … )

Faust. Part one

Comparison:

DCRB speaks of "a work"; AACR2 speaks of "an item." DCRB requires a note where AACR2 does not.

Comments:

The DCRB departure (work vs. item) seems to be deliberate, but why? Isn’t "Faust part one" a part of Faust and not a separate work from Faust? Perhaps a supplement would be considered a separate work but surely not a part? "Item" seems to cover both cases.

The requirement of the note is in line with general rare bibliographic principles.

Recommendations:

Reword the first paragraph to match AACR2 language. Keep the additional rule about the note.
