DCRB 1E. Publications without a collective title

DCRB 1E1.

When a publication has no collective title and the title page bears the titles of two or more individual works, other than supplementary matter, that are contained in the publication, transcribe the titles of the individual works in the order in which they appear on the title page. Separate the titles of the parts by a space-semicolon-space if the parts are all by the same person(s) or body (bodies), even though the titles are linked by a connecting word or phrase.

Les Akanças : prologue mélo-dramatique, en un acte et en prose ; suivi Des Espagnols dans la Floride : pantomime en trois actes et à spectacle

If the individual works are by different persons or bodies, or the authorship is in doubt, precede the title of each part other than the first by a period and one space, unless a linking word or phrase is already present. Precede each statement of responsibility by a space-slash-space.

The serving-man become a queen. Jockey of the green. The lass of Richmond Hill.

DCRB 1E2.

When a publication has no collective title, and works additional to those named on the title page appear in the publication, whether or not on pages laid out as title pages, either transcribe the titles of such works according to the provisions of 1E1 (in square brackets), or give them in the note area (cf. 7C16).

Prima[-decima] egloga della Bucolica di Virgilio / p[er] B. Pulci dilatino in uulgare traducta. [Elegia di Bernardo Pulci a Lorenzo de Medeci per lamorte di Cosimo ; Bernardus Pulcius Florentinus de obitu Diue Simonette. Francisci de Arsochis Senensis carmen bucolicum ... Buccolica di Hieronymo Beniuiene fiorentino. Bucolica di Iacopo Fiorino]

Note: No collective title; individual titles taken from leaves a6, e6, f2, g1, h7, and m4 verso

Alternatively, if the preceding method does not provide satisfactory results, devise a collective title for the whole publication (Cf. 1B5).

[A collection of acts of Parliament enacted in 1732]

AACR2 1.0H1a

In cataloguing an item comprising different works and with no chief source of information pertaining to the whole item, treat the sources of information for the different works as if they were a single source. Common examples include books containing a number of works with title pages for each (see 1.1G3) and sound discs with a different label on each side (see 6.0B1).

AACR2 1.1G3

If describing the item as a unit, transcribe the titles of the individually titled works in the order in which they appear in the chief source of information or, if there is no single chief source of information, in the order in which they appear in the item, treating multiple sources of information as if they were one source (see 1.0H).

Separate the titles of the works by semicolons if the works are all by the same person(s) or emanate from the same body (bodies), even if the titles are linked by a connecting word or phrase. Follow the title of each work by its parallel title(s) and other title information.

Clock symphony [GMD] : no. 101 ; Surprise symphony : no. 94 / Haydn

Lord Macaulay’s essays [GMD] ; and, Lays of ancient Rome

If the individual works are by different persons or emanate from different bodies, or in case of doubt, follow the title of each work by its parallel title(s), other title information, and statement(s) of responsibility. Separate the groups of data with a full stop followed by two spaces.

(Title page reads: Machiavel. Le prince, suivi de L’anti-Machiavel de Frédéric II)

Comparison:

Apparently the same result would occur whether transcribing using DCRB or AACR2, except DCRB 1E2 would put titles taken from later title pages in square brackets whereas AACR2 would not, and DCRB requires a note explaining the situation.

DCRB has been split into two rules; AACR2 has it in one. Why?

Comment:

The contrast between 1E1 and 1E2 appears to be between an item with no collective title listing all the works on the t.p. and one that does not list all the works on the title page. This could be made clearer by saying "the title page bears the titles of all of the individual works" instead of "the title page bears the titles of two or more individual works." Or better, combine the two rules as AACR2 does.

Recommendation:

Combine 1E1 and 1E2, using AACR2 1.1G3’s language.

Retain the bracketing and note requirements.
