The Katharine Kyes Leab & Daniel J. Leab American Book Prices Current Exhibition Awards are given for excellence in the publication of catalogs and brochures that accompany exhibitions of library and archival materials, as well as for electronic exhibitions of such materials. They are selected annually by the Exhibition Awards Committee of the Rare Books and Manuscripts Section (RBMS) of the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL), a division of the American Library Association (ALA). CLICK HERE TO BEGIN BROWSING THE WINNERS The winning catalogs, chosen from submissions by libraries and archives across the United States and Canada, are noted for their excellence in research, writing, design, and production. The Committee sorts the catalogs into three award divisions based upon their relative costs of production:
The exhibition presented here in an online format was originally displayed from 1986 to 1989 as a traveling exhibition of printed catalogs at several locations in the United States. It includes three Special Awards of Merit, as well as the Winners in the Divisions cited. History of the Awards: The Rare Books and Manuscripts Section created the Exhibition Catalog Awards in 1985 to recognize the fine work being done by library and archival institutions in the creation of exhibition catalogs. To accomplish this end, RBMS formed a standing committee to receive and judge the catalogs submitted by these institutions. The first year of the awards, 1986, covered catalogs published between January 1, 1983 and August 31, 1985. In 1987, the Committee received a generous grant from Katharine Kyes Leab and Daniel J. Leab, publishers of American Book Prices Current, to underwrite the awards, which became formally known as The Katharine Kyes Leab and Daniel J. Leab American Book Prices Current Exhibition Catalogue Awards. In 2001, the Committee introduced a fourth division, Brochures, which covers printed leaflets, guides, and informative broadsheets that orient viewers to exhibitions. At that time, the name of the Committee was changed from the Exhibition Catalogue Awards Committee to the Exhibition Awards Committee, and the ALA-favored spelling of catalog adopted in all the Committee’s writings, including this web site. Electronic Exhibitions became a fifth award division at ALA MidWinter 2003, following a three-year pilot project by the Committee to evaluate this genre. Eligibility is extended both to electronic exhibitions created as representations of physically existing exhibitions, as well as to "virtual" exhibitions existing only in electronic format. Special commendations were given to exemplary electronic exhibitions submitted to the Committee during the trial period. The first awards in Division Five will be made in 2004.
