1986: Division III
Previous | Next

He has long outlived his century.

Cambridge, Massachusetts: The Houghton Library, 1984.

iv, 15 p.

Celebrating the 200th anniversary of Samuel Johnson's death, this is a model exhibition checklist. The entries do not waste a word. Five scholars — Joseph Bartolomeo, James Basker, Jean Marsden, Ruben Quintero, and David Venturo — provided the pithy introductions to each section, long enough to illuminate, short enough to be digested while standing at the exhibit case. The physical production, in keeping with the text, is modest but elegant.

Typography by Richard Bartlett, Cotuit, Mass. The catalog was produced in conjunction with an exhibition commemorating the 200th anniversary of Johnson's death including books and manuscripts collected by Mary & Donald Hyde, Arthur A. Houghton Jr., Robert Metzdorf, Amy Lowell, Harold Murdock, Houghton Mifflin Co., and others. Division Three Winner, 1986. Exhibited courtesy of the Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center, The University of Texas at Austin. (ST)
