The Mikado: A Centenary Celebration.

By Reginald Allen and Fredric Woodbridge Wilson.

New York: The Pierpont Morgan Library, 1985.

[24] p.

Reginald Allen provides a narrative detailing the inception, creation, and performance history of The Mikado by W.S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan, with reference throughout the text to specific items on display. The checklist of exhibition items that follows Allen's essay interlaces quotes from the opera with bibliographical details of pieces, creating a witty interplay between the opera libretto and the documents surrounding its history. Two very different illustrations grace the front and back covers. The illustration of the character Katisha, shown in Act II costume designed by Charles Ricketts (front cover), relates to the interpretation and production of the play, while the color lithograph poster for D'Oyly Carte's Opera Company, 1899, showing the Three Little Maids (back cover), illustrates a promotional aspect of the opera's history.

Designed by Stephen Harvard and printed by Meriden-Stinehour Press. Catalog produced in conjunction with an exhibition held May 31 — July 31, 1985. Division Three Winner, 1986. Exhibited courtesy of the Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center, The University of Texas at Austin. (TS)
