Liberty of Conscience and the Growth of Religious Diversity in Early America, 1636-1786.

By Carla Gardina Pestana, with a foreword by Martin E. Marty.

Providence, R.I.: The John Carter Brown Library, 1986.

101 p., illustrated.

Drawing on sources that range from "angry pamphlets by semi-literate farmers and eloquent documents from Virginia country estates," this substantial catalog and the exhibition it records offer a wealth of historical facts and artifacts, forming the basis for the individual reader/viewer to ponder the development of liberty of conscience in the United States and the continuing challenges to it. A running narrative text is supplemented by numerous illustrations with informative captions.

Designed by Mark Zaref of Malcolm Grear Designers. Printed by Meridian Printing. Catalog produced in conjunction with an exhibition held May 1 — September 30, 1986, John Carter Brown Library. Division One Winner, 1987. Exhibited courtesy of the Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center, The University of Texas at Austin. (ES)
