The Survivors: An Exhibition of Rare Russian Books. Urbana-Champaign: University of Illinois Library, 1985. 20 p., illustrated. |

| Growing awareness of the true rarity of many of the materials in the University of Illinois' Slavic and East European Library led to the mounting of an exhibition and the production of this catalog. The catalog text discusses what makes a book "rare," the history of printing in Russia, and the effects of censorship and government control. In addition to books deemed rare by virtue of their age, and those made rare by banning or burning, the exhibition also includes valuable illustrated books and association copies. This catalog highlights an important function of exhibition catalogs: while making the Slavic collections at the University of Illinois better known, it also serves to attract additional donations in kind and in cash to support and increase the already notable holdings. Catalog produced in conjunction with the exhibition held July 16 — October 5, 1985, at the University of Illinois Library. Division Two Winner, 1986. Exhibited courtesy of the Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center, The University of Texas at Austin. (ES) |
