| This catalog has become a classic study of the historical and bibliographical evidence revealed by markings in books. Inscriptions by owners, commentary by scholars, marks made to guide binders and illuminators, the results of censorship, and the sometimes minute indications of early printing techniques are shown in 64 well-chosen examples. Superb photographs, handsome page layouts, and concise, informative captions contribute to the catalog's effectiveness, but the imaginative choice of subject and comprehensive treatment make this work outstanding. Catalog designed by Richard Bartlett; photographs by Victor Santamaria. Division Two Winner, 1987. Catalog produced in conjunction with an exhibition that opened at the Houghton Library, Harvard University, February 14, 1984. Exhibited courtesy of the Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center, The University of Texas at Austin. (SD) |
