| The exhibition and catalog celebrate the fine collection of historical children's material held in the Elisabeth Ball Collection at the Lilly Library. In an introductory essay by the collector and in the brief essays at the beginning of each grouping, this attractive catalog documents the development of children's literature from its beginnings in the eighteenth century to the mid-twentieth century. From early books that taught language and behavior, from fanciful nursery rhymes to religious instruction manuals, from fairy tales to chapbooks and moveable books, this catalog highlights important works written for children over the last four centuries. Colophon: "Editing and design by Indiana University Office of Publications.... Designed by Keiko Kasza, typeset by Indiana University Printing Services; the text is set in 9 point Palatino. Printed by Queens Group Kentucky, Inc. ... [on] 80 pound Mohawk Superfine Cover and ... text (softwhite). Two thousand copies ... printed." Catalog produced in conjunction with an exhibition held November 13, 1988 — January 25, 1989, at the Lilly Library, Indiana University. Division One Winner, 1989.
