1989: Division III

Sixty-five Years of Fine Printing at Carnegie.

Historical notes by Ed Fisher, Jr.; checklist of exhibit by M.C. Johnsen.

Pittsburgh, 1988.

32 p., illustrated, with tipped-in samples.

In 1923, the Laboratory Press was founded by Porter Garnett. This catalog includes a pleasingly philosophical account of the history of the press, as well as a checklist of items on display. The layout accommodates a wealth of illustrations in small format, and the tip-ins — pressmarks designed by Porter Garnett and Hermann Zapf, and a sample of pastepaper — add an agreeable touch of handwork. The catalog is a special treat for anyone who cares about the book arts.

Colophon: "Printed offset by The New Image Press, Pittsburgh, 1988, on Mohawk Superfine; tip-ins on mold-made paper printed letter press by the NLP as are the covers in four colors from random printer's stock rules. The cover stock is cut-offs preserved from the dedication program of the Hunt Library in 1961." Catalog produced to accompany an exhibition held April — December, 1988, in the Fine and Rare Book Room, Hunt Library, Carnegie Mellon University. Division Three Winner, 1989. Exhibited courtesy of the Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center, The University of Texas at Austin. (ES)
