| This is a superb example of the exhibition catalog as scholarly study. The author traces the many literary and artistic movements in Russia during the chaotic early decades of this century and discusses their relationship to concurrent political events. The deliberate obliteration of early 20th-century Russian literature under Stalin and his successors attests to the importance of libraries (those of Stanford University and the Hoover Institution in this case) in the preservation of culture. The design brilliantly incorporates typographic and graphic styles of the period, to make the catalog work as a whole. Verso of title page: "Designed by Peter Rutledge Koch and, through the kind offices of Adobe System and Sumner Stone, set in Adobe Garamond and Futura types with the assistance of Fred Brady and Margery Cantor. Cover produced with Adobe Illustrator 88 by Fred Brady." Catalog produced in conjunction with an exhibition held October 16, 1988 — January 6, 1989, Louis R. Lurie Rotunda, Cecil H. Green Library, Stanford University. Division One Winner, 1990. Exhibited courtesy of Stanford University Libraries. (SD) |
