| In the exhibition and catalog assembled in celebration of the Beinecke Library's twenty-fifth anniversary, the author elucidates current trends in the interdisciplinary field of manuscript studies. First, she explores the study of medieval manuscripts as archeological artifacts, discussing paper, pricking and ruling, letterforms and bookhands, decorations and illumination, and finally sewing and binding structures. Then she shows how the text and its function in society influenced its appearance and production. Aimed at the non-specialist, the catalog provides an excellent overview of the creation of medieval manuscripts and the social circumstances in which they were produced. Designed by Greer Allen, typesetting by Meriden-Stinehour Press, printing by Eastern Press, binding by Mueller Trade Bindery. Catalog produced in conjunction with an exhibition held August 15 — October 31, 1988, at the Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript Library, Yale University. Division Two Winner, 1990. Exhibited courtesy of the Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center, The University of Texas at Austin. (EC) |
