Motoring Tourists and the Scenic West, 1903 to 1948.

Catalog by Michael Vinson.

Dallas: DeGolyer Library, Southern Methodist University, 1989.

42 p., illustrated (some color).

In an engrossing treatment of transportation literature, Michael Vinson discusses the types of publishing that developed around the rise of the automobile. Through sales catalogs, manuals, travel guides, and narratives, the story of this segment of American tourism is examined. The cover illustration by Texas artist Barbara Whitehead nostalgically captures the period, with tourists viewing the splendors of nature. W. Thomas Taylor's typography reflects that found in much of the literature of the period. Samples of the distinctive graphic art produced to allure and seduce the would-be tourist are harmoniously integrated into the design.

Colophon: "Fifteen hundred copies of this catalog have been produced at the press of W. Thomas Taylor. It is printed in Kentonian, Gallia, and Signal types on Warren's No. 66 paper. The cover illustration is by Barbara Whitehead." Catalog produced in conjunction with an exhibition held June 22 — September 8, 1989, DeGolyer Library, Southern Methodist University. Division Three Winner, 1990. Exhibited courtesy of the Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center, The University of Texas at Austin. (TS)
