The Work of Stephen Harvard: A Life in Letters.

Catalog by David P. Becker.

Cambridge, Massachusetts: Houghton Library, Department of Printing and Graphic Arts, Harvard University, 1990.

62 p., illustrated.

This catalog celebrates the life and work of Stephen Harvard, an exceptionally talented designer, calligrapher, typographer, stonecutter, and artist. Reproductions showcase all aspects of Harvard's art, while excerpts from his extensive body of writing provide insight into the sense of natural harmony that underlies all of his work. The beauty of Harvard's letterforms and drawings is complemented by the graceful design of the catalog, creating a unified, appropriate, and poignant memorial tribute.

Colophon: "Composed printed, and bound by Meriden-Stinehour Press. The text type is Palatino with Diotima for display. The papers used are Mohawk Superfine text and Curtis Tweedweave Duplex cover stock. An edition of two thousand copies was produced in March 1990 in Lunenburg, Vermont. Design by Christopher Kuntze." Catalog published in conjunction with an exhibition held at the Houghton Library, April 23 — May 31, 1990. Division One Winner, 1991. Exhibited courtesy of the Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center, The University of Texas at Austin. (SD)
