| Presented by the Istituto Italiano di Cultura, Toronto, and the Thomas Fisher Rare Book Library, and sponsored by the Comune di Ravenna, this exhibition brought to North America a unique collection of fifteenth-century woodcuts from the monastic Biblioteca Classense. A brief introductory text clearly lays out the background of the single-sheet incunable woodcuts, including information on the medium itself and its history. Concise information follows each item, giving appropriate bibliographic details such as probable origin, size, watermark, coloring, provenance, and additional bibliographical references. Some illustrations are included, and while production values for the catalog are not lavish, the admirable text is neatly presented. Designed by Veronica Fisher. The catalog was produced in conjunction with an exhibition held September 18 — October 27, 1989, at the Thomas Fisher Rare Book Library, University of Toronto, with additional presentations at the Art Gallery of Hamilton, Ontario, Newberry Library, Chicago, and The Pierpont Morgan Library, New York. Division Three Winner, 1991. Exhibited courtesy of the Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center, The University of Texas at Austin. (ES) |
