| An allegorical figure of America boldly looks out at the reader from the cover, as a tantalizing invitation to open the book and pursue the topic. Within, the reader finds a thoughtful critical analysis of how visual images available to Europeans informed their view of the New World. An excellent introduction is followed by section narratives. The seductive and opulent design is achieved through a successful merging of typography, page layout, and reproductions of materials from the period, many illustrating the sophisticated developments in printmaking. Especially useful is the inclusion within the checklist of miniature reproductions of each item in the exhibition. Colophon: "Designed by Gilbert Associates ... printed
by Meridian Printing on Gleneagle paper. The typeface is Sabon, designed by
Jan Tschichold in 1966. It is a variation of the Garamond style and was named
after Jacob Sabon, a punchcutter from Lyon who is thought to have brought
some of Garamond's matrices to Frankfurt.... |
