Ties That Bind: Communities in American History.

By Lisa B. Auel.

Washington, D.C.: National Archives and Records Administration, 1992.

v, 34 p., illustrated.

This catalog provides a concise yet illuminating summary of the lives of fifteen groups of ordinary Americans and the variety of ways they find identity in communities. With an inviting format and imaginative use of illustrative materials, the exhibition offers representative descriptions of Americans forming and re-forming themselves into groups on the basis of family ties, ethnic similarities, hope for religious or secular utopia, economic need, and force of circumstance. The catalog demonstrates the truth of the inscription which appears on the National Archives Building: "The ties that bind the lives of our people in one indissoluble union are perpetuated in the archives of our government."

Designed by Serene Feldman Werblood. Catalog published in conjunction with an exhibition held Spring 1992 — Spring 1993 at the National Archives and Records Administration, Washington, D.C. Division Three Winner, 1993. Exhibited courtesy of the Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center, The University of Texas at Austin. (ES)
