Reconstructing a Medieval Library: Fragments from Lambach.

By Robert G. Babcock.

New Haven: Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript Library, Yale University, 1993.

124 p., illustrated.

Working with a dull-looking collection of medieval manuscript leaves and fragments, Robert Babcock identified parts of thirty-one different books all from the monastery at Lambach. In an introduction occupying the first two-thirds of the book he shows how he did it and gives a detailed account of this Austrian monastery and its library. This exhibition catalog nearly breaks the bounds of the genre: it both records scholarly achievement and ranks with the best examples of contemporary trade book production.

Colophon: Design & typography by Howard I. Gralla. Composed in Minion types by Yale University Printing Service. Printed by The Stinehour Press. Bound by Acme Bookbinding Company. This catalog was produced in conjunction with an exhibition held July 16 — September 25, 1994, at the Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript Library, Yale University. Division One Winner, 1994. Exhibited courtesy of the Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center, The University of Texas at Austin and the Exhibition Catalog Awards Committee. (ST)
