| Katherine Haskins takes a fresh look at visual sources in printed books from the vantage point of current critical theory. Six thematic sections, with brief essays, are followed by checklists of the 82 items displayed. Topics include Nature, Culture and the Arts of Improvement, Scenic Viewing, Tourism and Transcription, and Literature and the Imaginative View of Landscape. The catalog is rounded out with a glossary of graphic arts terms and a bibliography of titles suggested for further reading. Exemplary in intellectual conception and focus, the catalog is also handsomely illustrated and uses vignettes reminiscent of the time it discusses. Designed by Joan Sommers. Printed by Sheffield Press. Edition of 1,250 copies. Catalog published in conjunction with the exhibition by the same name held March 1 — June 25, 1993, Department of Special Collections, University of Chicago Library. Division Three Winner, 1994. Exhibited courtesy of the LSU Libraries, Louisiana State University. (HH) |
