RBMS Security Committee: State Laws: Maryland

The RBMS Security Committee attempts to maintain a current list of statutes from each of the fifty states pertaining to library thefts or other criminal acts involving library and archival materials (view index). Following are the relevant laws for the state of Maryland:


Maryland Code. Education. Title 23 - Libraries. Subtitle 4 – County Public Libraries.
Section 23-408 Theft or mutilation of books or other library material

(a) Prohibited--A person may not unlawfully take, detain, mutilate, injure, or disfigure any book, map, picture, engraving, manuscript, or other property of any library.

(b) Penalty--Any person who violates this section is guilty of a misdemeanor and on conviction is subject to a fine not exceeding $250, imprisonment not exceeding 3 months, or both.
