Austin is accessible by air via the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport. The city is also serviced by rail through Amtrak's Texas Eagle line. In addition, Austin is situated near several major highways and interstates, making it readily accessible by car. To Austin, TX   UP

By air: Austin-Bergstrom International Airport serves the Austin area. "Relax, you're in Austin" is the motto of Austin-Bergstrom International Airport where live music and exhibitions from local cultural institutions make it easy to do just that: relax.

By rail: The Austin Amtrak station is located at 250 North Lamar Blvd. and is convenient to downtown Austin. Please visit www.amtrak.com for schedules and pricing.


To the InterContinental Stephen F. Austin Hotel from the airport   UP

The InterContinental Stephen F. Austin Hotel is located 9 miles, or about 20 to 30 minutes, from the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport. Convenient travel to the hotel is available by shuttle, bus, taxi, limousine, or car. Information for each method of transportation is listed below.

By shuttle: It is convenient enough to travel in Austin during the conference without renting a car. If you choose to enjoy the city sans vehicle, the airport shuttle might be a preferable way to reach your hotel destination from the airport. The cost is around $10 per person each way. By bus: The #100-Airport Flyer Inbound will take you directly from the lower level of the airport to 6th Street and Congress. After departing the bus at 6th Street and Congress, you can walk north one block to 7th Street and turn east. The InterContinental Stephen F. Austin is located at 701 Congress. By car: Follow these directions to the hotel from Austin-Bergstrom International Airport.

  • Exit airport
  • Go west on Highway 71 (Ben White Boulevard)
  • Then go north on I-35
  • Exit 6th Street East
  • Turn north on Congress Avenue to the hotel at 7th Street

To the hotel from the Amtrak Station

By bus: After exiting the Amtrak station, walk north along Lamar Blvd one block to 5th street. Head west on 5th street one block to Baylor. Two buses stop at 5th and Baylor: Chicon #22 and The Silver Dillo--EB #451. Either bus will drop off at 5th and Congress. The hotel is located two blocks north at 7th and Congress (701 Congress.) To the University of Texas at Austin from the airport

San Jacinto Residence Hall (dorms)

By bus: The #100-Airport Flyer Inbound will take you directly from the lower level of the airport to the corner of 21st Street and San Jacinto at The University of Texas at Austin. Upon exiting the bus, the San Jacinto Residence Hall is directly across the street (San Jacinto) on the southwest corner of the intersection. Visit www.capmetro.org for more routes and schedules.

By car:

  • Exit airport
  • Go west on Highway 71 (Ben White Boulevard)
  • Then go north on I-35
  • Exit MLK (Martin Luther King Blvd.) west (turning left)
  • Turn north (right) on San Jacinto.
  • The San Jacinto Residence Hall is the first building on the left side of the street and is on the southwest corner of San Jacinto and 21st Street.

Driving Directions to the Harry Ransom Center

The Harry Ransom Center is on the University of Texas at Austin campus and is located in the heart of the city of Austin, just north of the downtown area. Campus is under a mile from the State Capitol. Main thoroughfares around campus include Guadalupe to the west, Martin Luther King Jr. (MLK) to the south, Red River to the east and 26th (Dean Keeton) to the north. Check out the main area map of the university. Paid parking is available by meter, pay lot, or garage.

IH-35
Take MLK Blvd. exit heading west. Campus will be on your right. Travel west on MLK until it intersects with Guadalupe St. Turn north on Guadalupe. The first stop light is 21st St. Turn east on 21st and the Harry Ransom Center is on the left.

MoPac/Highway 1
Take Windsor Road exit heading east. Windsor turns into 24th Street, which dead-ends into Guadalupe Street, the western border of campus. Turn south (right) on Guadalupe. At the third stop light, turn east (left) to 21st street.

Highway 71
From East, take I-35 North and follow directions for I-35 above. From West, take MoPac/Highway 1 North and follow directions for MoPac/Highway 1 above.

I-290
From East, take I-35 South and follow directions for I-35 above. From West, follow directions for Highway 71 above.

I-183
From North, take MoPac/Highway 1 South and follow directions for MoPac/Highway 1 above. From South, take Highway 111/Airport Boulevard North to MLK Boulevard. Head west on MLK Boulevard and campus will be on your right.


To the Harry Ransom Center from the hotel   UP

By bus: Route #1 will take you from 7th and Congress to 21st and Guadalupe. Routes #1, #101, and #5 will take you from 7th and Congress to 24th and Guadalupe.

Capital Metro also runs a free shuttle service called the "'Dillo" that serves Central Austin, the UT campus, and downtown areas. From any bus stop along Congress Avenue, you may pick up the Red or Gold 'Dillo to head north towards the university. Both the Red and Gold 'Dillo stop at 21st and Guadalupe.

By car: Head north on Congress to 11th St. (Congress dead ends at the capitol.) Turn west (left) on 11th. Turn north (right) on Lavaca St. Drive on Lavaca for 0.7 miles. Lavaca will dead-end on MLK (Martin Luther King Blvd.) Turn west (left) onto MLK. At next stoplight, turn north (right) on Guadalupe St. At 21st St. turn east (right) and the Harry Ransom Center is on the left. Park in Dobie Parking Garage (on next right Whitis), a meter, or pay lot. If possible, you may also park in the neighborhoods to the west of Guadalupe in a spot where parking is not prohibited.

By foot: Follow the By car: directions. The total distance is under 1.5 miles.


From Austin, TX to New Orleans, LA   UP

Take I-35 South to exit 230B and exit onto US-290 W / Ben White Blvd. / TX-71 / Johnson City heading east. Stay on TX-71 East until you intersect Interstate 10. Take I-10 east for approximately 420 miles until you reach New Orleans, LA.
