"Special Collections Resources on the World Wide Web" was initially developed at the University of Houston by Andrea Bean Hough, where it was subsequently maintained by Julie Grob until July 2002. The original site consisted of three parts:

The first part is now maintained by the Smithsonian Institution, and the latter parts by RBMS. The third part includes the following subdivisons, all relevant to those interested in Special Collections:
